When I read the summary I thought this was the coolest idea. It has so much serious potential and it was really good. But there was so much figurative language happening that it felt forced. When every paragraph is loaded with metaphors and hyperboles and whatnot ("my eyes shatter into a thousand pieces") it feels a little like it was written to be analyzed by an English class.There are a lot of lists made that doesn't use any commas ("I've been neglected abandoned ostracized and dragged from my home") and I can understand how that's used to affect the flow of the writing but it still bugged me a little. It took me several chapters to see past that and to actual begin liking the book despite the figurative language and grammatical errors. The ending felt really sudden. I think tahereh mafi should have written just a little bit more, make it feel like it ends there and it didn't leave me hanging either. If I didn't already own the rest of the series I wouldn't have felt too motivated to run out and but them. However, I did really like the book. The characters were pretty well-developed. Stories are always better when the reader gets emotionally attached and I definitely got attached. I feel for Juliette and I like the way her personality comes out throughout the book. The way she counts numbers all the time. Her fear of hurting others. The way she can't help but think of her mother even though she resents her. She is a perfect example character development. From hiding in the corner of the cell and letting a stranger take all her belongings to strapping on a skin-tight suit and being ready to fight. Overall the story was really good and the characters are excellent and I would recommend reading it. I really enjoyed this book, it was definitely a page turner and the writing style was unique and interesting to read, and also sheds some light on Juliette's current mental state. I also really like the characters and whilst I still have my issues with Juliette, I really enjoyed it when she took control of a situation and used her powers. This book gave me an X-men vibe and I really loved that and I can't wait for Juliette to use more of her powers and gain confidence. So whilst I enjoyed that aspect of the book I found the romance lacking, I like Adam, but I feel like his and Juliette's romance was a bit of an insta love, I know they have a past and what not, but I'm not sure if it justifies their sudden love for one another. Anyway, I really like this book and can't wait to fly through the next instalment unravel me!
