I-am citit mai întâi volumul "Viață de câine" și m-am îndrăgostit de stilul dezinvolt și de umorul său special. "Viață de câine" este o poveste relatată cu vocea unui câine abandonat care își caută un cămin. Trece prin multe peripeții, dar este foarte isteț și reușește să-i cucerească pe noii săi stăpâni cu privirea miloagă și lăbuța așezată pe genunchi. Prin această carte Peter Mayle mi-a devenit un autor drag, dar au urmat și alte cărți ale sale: Un an în Provence, Din nou în Provence, Un an bun, Hotel Pastis.Din toate scrierile sale despre Provence transpare tandrețea pentru regiune și locuitorii săi, în ciuda umorului și a ironiei unui englez la adresa francezilor. Peter Mayle a lucrat 15 ani în publicitate și ulterior chiar s-a mutat și locuiește în Provence. Scrie cu drag despre clima și aromele din Provence, despre obiceiurile și gusturile francezilor, ba chiar face referințe culinare precise și elaborate, demne de un provensal get-beget.Hotel Pastis este o fantezie la care visăm cu toții: retragerea din nebunia vieții urbane într-o afacere privată la țară sau o lovitură la o bancă pentru un câștig sigur și rapid. Nu voi povesti prea mult din carte, doar esențialul: Simon Shaw este directorul unei mari companii de publicitate. Divorțat de Caroline, călătorește în Franța unde o cunoaște pe Nicole, iar aceasta îi propune o afacere. Simon decide să se retragă într-un sat din Provence unde deschid împreună un hotel luxos. În paralel, o echipă de spărgători plănuiesc în detaliu o lovitură în buncărul unei bănci din zonă. Dar plăcerea lecturii și continuarea firului epic nu depind prea mult de răspunsul la această întrebare. Pentru că lectura este amuzantă, savuroasă, ușoară. Ce nu e ușor însă este trecerea de la viața activă a lui Simon – londonezul care călătorea cu avionul între continente și lua prânzuri de afaceri în fiecare zi – la viața pașnică de manager de hotel în care angajații se ocupă de tot iar lui nu-i mai rămâne nimic de făcut. Aici este adevăratul conflict, generat de turnura radicală pe care a luat-o viața lui Simon.Unele pasaje trebuie citite cu burta plină, în caz contrar descrierea mâncărurilor și a vinurilor franțuzești duce la declanșarea poftelor gastronomice. Scenele nu sunt neapărat umoristice, dar ironia și replicile sarcastice abundă, creând o atmosferă destinsă, de vacanță. Și cum altfel să fie în Provence cea îmbibată de mirosul de levănțică de sub soarele sudului, decât vacanță?
Another book club suggestion, Hotel Pastis is the story of a rich, English, advertising Executive named Simon Shaw who works too hard and has too little fun. Things change for Simon when he takes a small vacation in the French countryside and meets a local woman named Nicole Bouvier. Although their initial encounter is brief, there is some obvious attraction between them both and over the next month they begin dating, at which point Nicole tells Simon her new plan for him is to build a new hotel in her home town. Simon quickly goes along with it and a much of the story is about its construction.A secondary story is running parallel to this, that story being about a bunch of local criminals having a plan to rob a bank which first involves them getting in serious cycling shape (as their getaway will be accomplished as posing as a bike racing team). The author takes care to make sure that these criminals don't really seem that bad, but more of a cast of lovable losers.The two story lines intersect after the hotel is open and the bank is robbed. A friend of the hotel (the son of a wealthy American CEO who has dealings with Simon's previous advertising firm) runs into the bank robbers and is then kidnapped and ransomed (of course in a friendly sort way).The story is a little reminiscent of Carl Hiassen in that there is a cast of quirky characters and multiple story lines and points of view through out. While constantly tongue-in-cheek, it never reaches the zany level. The book is an easy enough read, but I'd be surprised if it proves to be memorable. Although I finished the book only days before, I had to go back and look up the main characters names b/c they have already evaporated from my memory. I'll be interested to see how we stretch out any discussion around this book into an hour and a half book club meeting.
Do You like book Hotel Pastis: A Novel Of Provence (1994)?
Mayle's Hotel Pastis is the perfect treat when one is wanting something light, but not unintelligent or poorly written. Let's think of it as the thinking reader's bon-bon. Light and sparkling as a glass of Dom Perignon ( not a little of which is quaffed in the novel), Mayle spins an engaging story of middle age, top of his game ad exe who is tired of the racquet. Simon chucks it all and with the help of his natty aide de camp, Ernest and his savvy new girlfriend Nicole, he restores an old police station in Provence with the intention of opening a small hotel. Ah, that life was that simple. Before long he is caught up in the not quiet life of the countryside. He finds himself fending of Mafia types, involved in retrieving a kidnapping victim and buffeting an expat neighbor's attempts to discredit the hotel. Not to mention there is a bank robbery with some of the most delightful petty criminals in fiction. Witty dialogue, wry insights, pleasing descriptions of setting, marvelously funny characters. Much fun.

Picked this up for a $1 and read it on the plane - quick and fun. You can tell the author was an ad man (like the main character) as he provides a little too much detail about the main character and not enough about some of the other major characters - such as the girlfriend and the butler - (yes, there's a butler). The crime mystery takes up all of about 35 pages of the 380+ total - but its a fun addition (not the main story) and I have to admit that I did not guess the ending. I do have to warn you - this book will move you to take long lesiurely, multi-course lunches and consider quitting your job. Not the best option for a vacation book - way too tempting. I may be doomed - my mother-in-law saw me reading this and gave me three more Mayle books to read! Oh well, bon appetit!

Very entertaining. Lots and lots of eating fine French food and drinking fine French wine (I was pregnant while reading this book and missing wine...). A rich British advertising executive gets fed up with his job and decides to restore an old ruined building and open a hotel in the south of France. He is aided in his project by his personal assistant Ernest and an attractive French woman named Nicole, whom he meets at an auto shop the first time he is down by his new property. Meanwhile, a gang of crooks plans an elaborate bank robbery, which ends up giving the British exec the happy ending he is looking for!
