I love books about books, and I had very positive feelings about this novel before I began to read it. However, as I my reading progressed, I felt a sense of disappointment with the novel. The characters are superficially drawn, the plot was shallow, and there were characters thrown into the story that really did not have a purpose. I read the whole book because I felt it had a potential that did not manifest itself. This is a well written romantic mystery, but I don't truly enjoy romantic mysteries. I believe it is the first in a series built around a woman who repairs books, loves to eat, and falls for a very James Bondish detective of murky background. Mixed into this froth is San Francisco, a wonderful backdrop, and a hippie commune. Just because I don't like this type of mystery doesn't mean it is not a good read—for somebody else.
