Ok, I got the author mixed up with Elizabeth Berg and it's not until I reached the end with the photo I realized my mistake. Not a bad story and I liked the minor characters better than the main ones! The plot takes off on the premise "he went out for a pack of cigarettes and never came back", although that's a much cleaner cut than what Chuck puts Eve through. I think she was way too much of a push-over even at the end. What is it that only in novels does the pounds just fall off a woman, where she doesn't even notice? I deducted one star for that. I also thought there would be much more discussion of money and there's just a bit at the end. If Eve's just an admin at a college, how can she support everything? Perhaps Ivan's death left her a fat insurance settlement. Not sure how I felt about this book. I loved the way it was written - it is about a woman disjointed by her 2nd husband leaving, after being widowed by her first. The language and speech in which it is written reflects that - the writing is at times simplistic and commonplace and then at others, deep and intense. I'm not sure if the writer intended this or not - I felt like I was in the head of the main character - a bit lost at times with some scrabble of thought and idea and then other times, being quite clear in what was happening. I imagined this to be how it must seem going through this kind of ordeal. I fear it was not done intentionally, however, and that, really, the writing was just confusing and all over the place. A lot of characters with little depth - I kept getting confused by who was who. A sweet book overall, but if I'm being totally honest, it is not one I will be keeping on my bookshelf to read again someday - to the used book store it goes.
