About book Farseer Trilogy 3-Book Bundle: Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, Assassin's Quest (2014)
I am torn between 3 and 4 stars on this. I found the story intriguing and it kept me up past my bed times way too many nights. But the third book was not quite as satisfying as I would have liked, and I thought the promise of some of the foreshadowing did not really pay off in the end. Still, it is a good take on the genre focusing on the assassin as a hero or anti-hero really. Hobb is a good writer. I recommend reading it especially if you like epic fantasy. Having just finished “Assassin's Quest,” book 3 in Hobbs' Assassin Trilogy, I am a loss for words that adequately describe my reaction to this series. I was in thrall with the entire saga and so glad that it did not end quickly. The richness of Robin Hobbs’ imagination astounded me, as well as the depth and breadth of her development of the culture, characters, and story. I must admit that the Verity and Fitzchivalry’s Quest was compelling to me in a manner similar to that of Frodo and Sam in “Lord of the Rings,” although I would not necessarily try to compare the two works to assert which one was “better” than the other. That would not be fair or appropriate. What I can assert is this… what both sagas evoked in me was awe, curiosity, passion, insight, and sadness that the endings were reached. It was easy to be carried into the flow of the stories and feel involved, yet simultaneously observing. Robin Hobbs is now an author whose works I will continue to explore and by which my life will be enhanced.
