About book Evolution Of Calpurnia Tate, The (2009)

Kelly, J., (2009). The evolution of calpurnia tate. New York: Henry Holt and Company. NewberyCalpurnia is a pre-teen girl growing up in 1899. She does not like the traditional “accepted” activities for girls during this turn of the century time in society. Calpurnia is intrigued by the world around her and she is thrilled to spend her day observing nature. Her love and interest in nature create a needed bond between her and her grandfather which gives her the support she needs and helps her learning take a new shape. Author Jacqueline Kelly has created an engaging masterpiece with sharp writing filled with lots of details about science, the time period, and family life. This is a great read to integrate science, history, and language arts. This gem is sure to get readers looking at the world around them much more! Recommended for grades 4-7, or anyone who wants a book they cannot put down! I had never read such a simple story that could touch me in many different ways.Being a girl in 1899 was not easy. You were supposed to know how to cook, sew and do crochet, but Calpurnia is different. She loves nature and she wants to make decisions that can change history.I completely adored Calpurnia's grandfather, her little brother Travis, who is discovering the perks of being a teenager, and Calpurnia's strength.Lovely read.
