About book El Caso De La Pistola Y El Pastel De Chocolate (2013)

Colin Fischer suffers from Asperger's Syndrome. He needs a chart of facial expressions to figure out what everyone around him is feeling. Up until beginning high school this year he has had a helper, Marie, who attended school with him to help him navigate people. Now he is on his own with his chart and his well used notebook where he records everything that happens around him. When you take out emotions you basically have the facts or that is how Colin sees the world. When a gunshot rings out in the cafeteria at the beginning of the year Colin jumps in as a detective and makes it his goal to solve the mystery - he is certain the student held accountable is innocent. Colin must literally step way out of his comfort zone to figure out what really happened. Includes notes from his personal notebook along with footnotes of extra information. I found myself cheering for him. First - kudos for representing an Asberger's character so well and for having parents who are cool, funny, real, and doing the best they can.The ending was unsatisfying - maybe they are setting up the reader for a sequel, but I didn't love that nor the burgeoning friendship between Colin and Wayne - didn't feel real whereas everything else did (Colin's brother is a pill - I thought that might resolve better - again, if there is a sequel, I can understand leaving that hanging). Finally, what was going on with Colin and Melissa didn't quite feel logical. Some sexual innuendo -not sure appropriate for MS. References Oedipus Rex - maybe good for Grade 10 after they have read that freshman year.

Very good read, Colin is a really well crafted character and the whodunit thread plays out well.
