About book Dune Road (2009)

I normally love Jane Green novels but this one felt outside the author's comfort zone. She set her story in a U.S. beach town as if trying to compete with the popular beach reads and her quirky style feel flat. Her characters seemed unbelievable and without spoiling the read, one especially continued to irk me throughout the novel. The lead up of the supposed secrets left me underwhelmed and instead of feeling sorry for them, I was angered that they stayed in that situation and it was anti-climactic. I miss the author's sassy style and am saddened that a successful author feels the the need to adapt her unique voice to fit in with flash-in-the-pan chick lits. First of all let me say I am a HUGE fan of Jane Green and I do truly enjoy most of her novels but this novel was not her best work! I am toggling back and forth it seems between 2 and 3 stars. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy this novel overall and will read pretty much anything with this author’s name on it but Dune Road is very predictable and just seems all to familiar to her other novels. It was entertaining and light for a summer day but I feel like the "rich family in Connecticut" formula is getting old fast and I found that I was anxious for this novel to be finished so I could move on to another book. Dune Road is set in a wealthy community in a little Connecticut town and contains characters that are very similar to her other novels. They are all rich, their husbands all work on Wall Street and they all wear expensive clothes and jewelry to boot. They all use the same interior designers, and they all drive luxury SUVs. This is such a similar scene to The Beach House which was by far a much better read than Dune Road. I am definitely ready for a plot containing something other than rich people in Connecticut.Let’s get back to the premise of this novel…Kit Hargrove is a recent divorcee’ and is trying to make a new life for herself and her children, Tory and Buckley. Kit’s best friend Charlie is married to a successful Wall Street banker named Keith and she is a part time florist. Tracy is a yoga instructor/owner at a studio called Namaste. These three women are the best of friends and always there for one another when needed. The plot thickens when the financial market crashes leaving Charlie and Keith penniless, Kit starts dating a new mysterious man, and Tracy becomes involved with Kit's boss. As the drama unfolds and all these lives intertwine it seems as though everyone’s lives will be forever changed.I totally know I am repeating myself here but let this be a imitation of this novel…This seems to be a cardboard copy of similar characters, repetitive dialogue and some absurd plot lines. One of the twists with the mysterious Steve was very easy to figure out. I also truly questioned the unlikely easy forgiveness of some of the situations with these ladies. By the end of the novel of course everyone is happy and lives tied up in a cute little bow. Most times I feel as though we are just getting to the bottom of all the dramas involved and then there is an abrupt ending but this time I didn’t mind that at all because I was ready to move on. It's an easy read for the beach but make sure to borrow it from the library if you still want to read it. As always Happy Reading my friends…until we meet again :)

Do You like book Dune Road (2009)?

I got this book from a charity store which is largely full of house clearances from people who've recently passed away. This book, when I picked it up, had never been read. So the person must've died before they got around to reading it. They obviously knew something I didn't.What has happened to Jane Green? I used to love her books, but they have become increasing bland and dull over recent years. This one reads like she wrote it with one eye on her keyboard and the other on her royalty account. There's no story, no conflict, no tension, and the characters are insipid and interchangable. The bulk of the action feels like it happens 'off page', and almost the whole book is a monument to telling, not showing. Sorry Jane, but you need to get your groove on again.

Enjoyed the characters and plot of this book. Jane Green always does such a nice job describing the character's emotions.Kit lives very simply in the wealthy town of Highfield on CT's "Gold Coast". She is embracing her happiness with her down to earth friends, her cozy cape cod, and a job as an assistant to a best selling author. Her divorce is over and she and her ex are doing their best to co-parent. Now a new man enters her life and things are wonderful but are they as great as they seem? A great beach read.
