As a whole, my first graders love any book by David Shannon. They especially enjoy "David Goes to School". I found this book on Scholastic's website and immediately knew I had to order it."Bugs in my Head" is about a child who has lice. It talks about what lice are and what a nuisance they can be. The book uses humor, along with engaging illustrations to describe what having lice physically feels like and the thoughts that go through any child's head when they discover bugs are living in their hair.I know first graders would love learning about bugs that can live in your hair. I may share this book with my students during our insect unit. It is a great fiction story, that discusses real facts and information. Students would be able to transfer their knowledge to a nonfiction book about lice, because this book would provide ample background knowledge. This book could also be shared with an individual who has lice because it would calm their fears and go through what to expect. David Shannon's oil paintings are so affective in conveying the crazy, out-of-control experience of a life-altering, blood-sucking, lice-infestation, while still conveying wit & humor to turn a gross, icky subject into an informative, entertaining book that all kids, parents & teachers should read!Very recommended to anyone who raises, educates, entertains, or in any way works with kids. Fun & informative in the zany way that only David Shannon can deliver!
