About book Der Algorithmus Der Liebe (2013)

I thought this was really interesting! While I had a little trouble fully connecting to the characters (it's told in a way that's kind of distancing in my opinion), I still found the concept intriguing enough to suck me in, and I ended up going to bed really late last night so that I could finish it. It's definitely left me with some things to think about--like artificial intelligence, and the grieving process, and what my online legacy might be (in my post-death e-mails and texts I would probably still talk a lot about how cute polar bears and pandas are, heh). Good choice for Book Brew, Nina--I bet it'll be an interesting discussion! The premise for this story is very interesting and something to think about and wonder how far off it is in the future.....or is it already here. The other night the Bill Board Awards had a hologram of Michael Jackson singing, so who know what technology is already out there. Sam Elling works for a computer dating company. He invents a algorithm to help people find their ideal mate. It works too well. People are finding their mates and not staying on the dating site (and spending their money) Sam gets fired. His girlfriend, Meredith, worked with Sam and know what he is capable of. Meredith's grandmother dies. She wishes there was a way to talk with her again. In all of unemployed spare time, Sam develops some computer capabilities that allow all the electronic information that a person has generated (emals, face time, Facebook) be put togehter for a dead person to be able to "talk" to those remaining on earth. Meredith and Sam develop a business allowing people to talk to their departed. Reactions are varied. (including religious people and those who had things to say to the departed)

I loved this book and wish the program that Sam created was real.

Well written but too depressing and manipulated in my opinion.
