I liked Jenna Black's "Devil Inside" series so I decided to give this new one a try. The premise is intriguing: people descended from the different pantheons of gods who can gain superpowers and immortality by killing those who have the seeds of immortality within. The story is dark (although not as dark as the Devil series) but Black offsets it with humor and her heroine's wicked sarcastic streak. The heroine, Nikki, is intriguing with a strong sense of morals which are constantly being tested by her new supernatural challenges. The plot is fast-paced and this is not a book to skim, or else you'll miss crucial details. The world Black has created feels well-fleshed out and I'm looking forward to picking up the sequels to find out more about it. Constant action/cliffhangers makes this nearly impossible to put down. The plot is a lot of fun and i couldn't put it down. However, the breakneck pace leaves little room for characterization and what character description we do get is shallow and uneven. It's nice that there isn't a clear line between the good and the bad, but I don't entirely believe some of the personality shifts. The mythology, which is a big selling point, barely features in the book. Overall I would rate this 2.5 stars. It's worth checking out if you're into paranormal fantasy and looking for something new, but if you're starting out in this genre I'd recommend you look elsewhere. Be warned: The plot contains loads violence and implied sexual assault. Recommended for fans of paranormal fiction like Vicki Pettersson's zodiac series.
Do You like book Dark Descendant (2011)?
While I enjoyed this very much the lack of any real romance didn't go unnoticed.
