About book Casa De Verano Con Piscina (2012)

More creepy than it at first seems. The main character is a bastard – in a sociopath/psychopath kind of way. He’s a doctor and he kills one of his patients. You know he did it deliberately – and most of the book is explaining why and how. This book explores the interpersonal relationships between adult friends on holiday by the beach. Once you get used to the main character's voice you settle in to see how everything pans out. There's not much action in this one, and not much mystery either - it's really more a drama. I didn't actually 'like' any of the characters which sometimes made me feel like I was less invested in the outcome than I should be.It’s written in a very honest tone, which can be off-putting but there are obviously many people around like this and, sadly, some of them are doctors. It kept my interest to the end (even though it was sometimes a bit tedious) – but ultimately it left a bad taste in my mouth. So glad that Dr. Marc Schlosser is not my doctor! There weren't many/any 'nice' characters in this book but the story was very good. It was interesting how Dr. Schlosser describes the illnesses he saw in his patients in terms of events in nature or occurrences in life (e.g AIDS is like "a jackhammer hitting a load bearing wall from the inside"). Can't wait to read Koch's other book, "The Dinner"!
