About book Capitana Marvel: Anhelando Volar (2011)
I've heard amazing things about Kelly Sue DeConnick's take on Captain Marvel and I'm really glad that I picked it up. This volume is packed full kick ass female characters. It's great too see from a Marvel book and I can see why this book has such a passionate fan base.For someone picking up a Captain Marvel book for the first time it has plenty of back story to provide all the information required, in fact, the whole plot of this volume pulls on the character's origins and her taking on the name of Captain Marvel.As much as I loved the portrayal of the characters, I think it could take me another book to get into the story line. I also had a difficult relationship with the art. The art of the first part of the book is very different from what I'm used to but I did get into it and I think it added a lot of drama to the action scenes (they were extremely strong) but then, for the last two issues, the art switches and I found it very jarring. I love Emma Riso's art, and think it is perfect in Pretty Deadly (also by DeConnick) however, after getting used to the art style of the first half of the books, I found it very disorientating and I don't feel it worked.All that being said, I think what DeConnick is doing with this book is fantastic and I will probably read more. Though I feel we need better female representation across the board with comics, a book like this is doing a lot to even things out. I really loved this new take on Captain Marvel. Watching Ms. Marvel assume a man's mantle without changing herself was really fascinating, and the writers managed to do this while giving her a chance to actually control her fate instead of letting circumstance/men decide it for her. The characters were all very believable, and they managed to make a female character who enjoyed being in control and being competitive without making her unbearable, which some people seem to believe is impossible. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants their faith in but-kicking women in comics restored.
