About book Broken Boundaries (2009)

I’m pretty sure there are not many things that I can say about Broken Boundaries that has not already been said. I like male male romance. I like sci fi romance. I’ve enjoyed several Evangeline Anderson books in the past and I will continue reading her books in the future. When I factor in all of that I figured this would be a great read. I was wrong. This one was apparently one that was simply just off for me. Chaz has been accepted into the Lunar Academy of Excellence. This is his dream. He knows he has what it takes to be a Needle gunner. His dreams are coming true. Upon arrival he is immediately introduced to his partner the pilot of his Needle, Eric Ferron. Chaz couldn’t be happier. He’s reaching his goals. Very little is explained to him by his superiors of the Needle program other than he will spent every moment with his partner. Eric is the one that will explain just how thorough EVERY moment is. They will shower together, sleep together in the same bed, they will share skin. I can understand much of Chaz’s confusion. I like things explained for me as well. That was much of my problem finding enjoyment in Broken Boundaries. Very little is explained to Chaz, thus very few of the why’s were explained to me. The Needler subculture was confusing, especially the kissing. I understand (sort of) why Chaz and Eric had to connect. Why did all the Needler’s have to greet with kisses? Then there is the mind boggling manner in which the Needle is operated to its maximum potential. Ferron will literally f... them forward. Chaz and his desire not to be “gay” and Ferron’s constant pushing of proper operation of the ship made Chaz and his reluctance to give in to his attraction to Eric feel even that more forced. The sexual tension is high throughout the entire book. Some of it actually worked for me. Some of it felt beyond juvenile. Some of the sexual tension brought a crazy level of absurdity to the pages. At one point in Eric’s coaxing of Chaz to just let go of his not gay tendencies readers are treated to the begging with “Let me just put the head in.” Yes I rolled my eyes with that gem too. It gets better though. Readers need to be prepared to over utilize that suspension of belief with the flight methods of the Needle ship. “Get ready to shoot like you’ve never shot before. And get ready to be f...ed.” That is how Eric pep talks Chaz right on into achieving that ultimate connection for the fight of their lives against the attacking alien race. There are just a few too many things that did not work for me. (Not Yaoi)This story really wasn't my thing. I think it's because I read the author's other book, "The Assignment", and thought it would be similar. Both are GLBT lit but "The Assignment" felt more like a yaoi book, which I liked a great deal. I just personally had issues with the relationship and some characters like Burns and Landrews. Evangeline Anderson is known for her Brides of the Kindred series so those readers know she can use sci-fi to explain a lot of kinky stuff her characters do. I just wasn't believing it. I didn't feel like there was a connection between the two leads. I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because it was well written.
