About book Bring On The Blessings With Bonus Material (2009)

Definitely a quick easy read with very predictable plot and outcome. Bernadette saves a ton from financial collapse by buying the town up and starting a foster care program. She brings in 5 kids to be fostered by the locals and by herself. These kids are definitely rough around the edges, but of course they are hauled in by their new loving parents. Minor problems occur during the book, but are easily solved. If you are looking for a quick, easy read this one is for you! I’ve never read a Beverly Jenkins book before; never heard of her, in fact, but I got “Bring on the Blessings” as a special Nook Book deal several months ago. I started reading it Saturday morning, figuring to read a few chapters, do my chores and get back to it later. I finished it at 3:30 PM, and none of my chores got done. It was an enjoyable read, inspirational and heart-warming, with a fascinating dollop of Black history thrown in, and some very nice comedic elements. I liked that most of the women are strong, sassy, intelligent, warm characters. Most of the men are pretty great too. There was a wonderful mix of older and younger characters. The storyline got rather over the top several times -- well the whole premise was over the top [Wealthy black divorcee, with a master’s degree in social work, hears 2 news stories that awaken her philanthropic impulses: a historic African American town in Kansas is about to go bankrupt, and a clutch of hard luck foster children are in desperate need of homes. Bernadine buys the town, rebuilds it in record time, and convinces the townspeople to join with her plan to bring in hard-to-place foster children], but she made it work. It was a true "feel good" read which is what I needed that day (on another day I might say there was too little real conflict & too many of the problems that did occur were solved the easy way, by throwing money at them). I did have one pet peeve: the Nook version has serious editing issues – inconsistent verb tenses, misspellings, occasional poor grammar – that drove me nuts. But I still liked it well enough that I down-loaded the three sequels that I found.
