About book Bloody River Blues (2000)

John Pellam is a location scout working on the set of a " Bonnie and Clyde " style movie in Maddocks, Missouri. When a random guy opens his car door and sends his beer crashing to the ground he becomes a wanted man in the connection with a murder and the shooting of a cop.He becomes Missouri's most wanted man and everybody seems to want to track him down and to make sure that his mouth is kept firmly shut.First of all I must say from the outset that thrillers are not normally my bag unless it happens to be somewhat special, so maybe a thriller addict would enjoy this a lot more than I did. I have only ever read one other Jeffery Deaver book and I enjoyed that one more. Apparently this is one of his earlier books and he does get much better. There is nothing terrible about ' Bloody River Blues' , it's just not great. It's just that everything about it is average. There is nothing original or fresh about this story and it is probably a storyline that has been regurgitated over and over ( in various forms) in books and films over the years.I did like the character of John Pellam ( he is to be found in other 'Location Scout' books) but I prefered the character of the cop, Buffet. The parts of the book that centre around cop, Donnie Buffet are probably the better written and more interesting parts. And I did like the way Jeffery Deaver tricks us a few times in the telling of the story, that's something I wouldn't mind incorporating into my own work.Average 7/10

I enjoyed this book as much as I can enjoy a crime thriller at this point in my literature life. I don't want to say my tastes have matured so much as they have broadened away from crime. That being said, Deaver is still one of my favorite authors and he write exceptionally well.I was expecting you're average run-of-the-mill witness to a major crime story, but I should have known better. Deaver never does anything run-of-the-mill, which is why I suppose I still read his crime novels. Pellam is not the scared timid witness to a crime that freaks out and runs away. In fact, until after his first encounter with the police, he didn't even know he was a witness to a crime. I admire his ability to stand up to the police and his unexpected friendship with a cop who's paralyzed as a result of the crime he "witnessed."In typical Deaver style, the bad guys are mostly good, just with a few bad habits, and the good guys need a swift kick in the balls. But not all the time. I especially liked that it didn't end how I hoped it would. As the French would say, "How like life."A good read for even the passing crime novel fan.

Do You like book Bloody River Blues (2000)?

A WEAK ATTEMPT IN THE PAST OF AN EXCELLENT WRITERohn Pellam, while scouting locations in Missouri for a movie, due to a casual incident, is taken as the key witness of a street murder that leaves two people dead and a cop paralyzed, from then on he is wanted by the Feds and the boss of the gang of thugs who committed that crime.Although I liked the other episodes of the location scout series, I was not pleased with this one, I have experienced a slow cold boring novel with a poor plot and shallow characters with the exception of Donnie Buffet, the crippled cop. Suspense was not well recreated when it has to be done and I could count just only one interesting twist that turns the whole story the other way, now Pellam goes after the perpetrators of the crime (the Feds, the thugs) , trying to find who was behind that act and why. This novel was written around or before 1993, it is clear that at that time Mr. Deaver was polishing his writing skills in order to become the excellent writer that he is today. So I conclude that William Jefferies and Jeffery Deaver are both the same "individual" but two different "writers"If you are looking for a good location scout mystery series novel, better try another attempt like Shallow Graves, is in my opinion the best of the trilogy (Shallow Graves - Bloody River Blues - Hell's Kitchen)

John Pellam is a location spotter for a movie company filming in a small down at the heels Missouri town. Going into town for some beer for a poker gathering in his Winnebago, he is walking back when the door of a parked car opens and knocks the bag of beer out of his hands and he confronts the door opener and looks into the car before gathering up his unbroken bottles and getting a bag from the store while a local cop stands by. A short time later there is a in the area in which the policeman is also shot, but not killed. The police now believe that John can identify the person in the car and confront him. He denies it, but the police don’t believe him. He is hounded by the police and the prosecutor and the FBI get into the act as well as the shooters and John finds himself beset with all sorts of troubles. This is Jeffery Deaver writing as William Jefferies but it is still a fast moving tale and a quick read.
