About book Amulet, Book 2: The Stonekeeper's Curse (2009)
A decent follow-up to a decent introductory volume. Again, at the behest of my kids I read this sequel. The heroes move on to save the human kids' mom from the poison and evil dark elves show up and start harassing everyone and blowing shit up. It all sounds trite in retrospect, but Kibuishi has a gift for succinct panels and almost cinematic action which leads me to conclude that these graphic novels would make way better movies than comics.Again, the world is pretty neat, not your standard fantasy fare. Populated by animals that are actually cursed humanoids (I guess), cities on waterfalls, and pretty cool battle houses that literally beat the crap out of foes, the series is a bit more creatively daring than much of its ilk.Not bad, not bad. My kids love the second one probably the best! Though I don't think I have a preference, the whole series is good. I realized I never said what these books were about. The main character in the novel, a girl named Emily, finds a necklace with a stone pendant called the amulet (that's what the first book is all about). Her mom had gotten stung by a giant arachnopod (octopus spider like monster) and the second book is about her quest (which also includes her brother and other helper friends) in finding a cure of the poison for her mom. Along the way bad elves (and they do look scary) try to kill them. They get the help of furry friends (a fox who is an expert fighter) and robot creatures that had been built by her great grandpa (who also had been a stone keeper, the proper term now for Emily, who now wears the necklace). Stone keepers are given great power, the power resonating from the stone. But we are finding out in the second book, that with that great power, comes great control, for the stone has it's own voice and mind and tempts Emily to take certain paths. Emily tries to keep control of the stone and her own will power and mind. Great book!
