This is the only Siri Mitchell book I've ever been able to finish. I realize that I will never be a fan of her writing, and need to stop being enticed by the beautiful covers.I would give this book 2.5 stars, if I could. I really enjoyed it for a spell, but then it was just okay. The characters got on my nerves, especially Julietta, and Luciana to some degree. Not much else to say about this one. A fun read for New Englanders since Boston's North end is a "must do". The book's prospective is fresh and would be a good basis for a TV series. It is interesting to read about the daily lives of our immigrant ancestors. No one ever talks about the challenges of assimilation and culture at that time for women. I am 1/4 Italian-American and didn't understand my Grandfather's prejudices against Sicilians. His own in-laws thought his Scottish-Canadian wife's choice of a 1st generation Italian-American husband was shockingly scandalous. The Scotts got to know him and accepted him. I just couldn't understand how my grandfather could be so prejudice against other Italians, especially because he was born here. The Sicilians down the street where just like my family but my relatives assumed the worst. I don't condone grandpa's prejudices, but this book helps me better understand the quirks of our Italian heritage and where his fears and prejudices came from.
