Zoomy, the unusual protagonist in this story, is a kid with various physical issues and a lot of heart. Abandoned in infancy by both his parents, his mom at least had the sense to leave him on the doorstep of his loving, stable, paternal grandparents. The Danger Box contains some mystery and danger, friendship and family ties, and an opportunity to learn a great deal about Charles Darwin. For the squeamish, who don't think young children should be exposed to the rougher side of life, issues of out-of-wedlock birth, alcoholism and crime do crop up. I would recommend this book to kids age 10 to 13. Super short chapters (most are just a couple of pages), so you feel like you are getting discrete chunks rather than a flowing story. That's not a negative, just a different feel. It goes with the way the main character sees the world (he's extremely myopic, so only sees what's in his field of vision with an object *very* up close).It's an interesting story of an interesting family -- a boy and his grandparents primarily, but also his new friend and her mom, the townspeople in their small rural town, and the boy's father who returns after being going for longer than the boy has been alive.
