About book Your Brain At Work: Strategies For Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus, And Working Smarter All Day Long (2009)
Very thorough research on the brain at work. There are many considerations regarding how to optimize your productivity guided by a better understanding of your brain. For example, the brain is almost like a muscle. So, if you use it for three hours straight in one sitting, you cannot expect the same performance from it the rest of the day. People naturally understand that with exercise. No one tries to run for three hours and then expect his/her muscles to still perform normally the rest of the day. So, the same should be applied to the brain. Also, it says when our best creative ideas occur. Lastly, there is practical advice such as when and how to respond to a laundry list of emails each day at work. Your Brain at Work is an interesting exploration of what neuroscience has discovered about how our brains work: the limitations, changes, fears and strengths. I didn't love the format of the book where the author starts with a story in the life of two characters then pulls apart what happens before finally giving you a reworked version of the story. On the other hand, it made sense in the context of the discussion and gave the author a thread of consistency throughout a book that talks about very different brain processes. It begins with focusing on how the brain works, how we focus on things and what distracts us. It then moves on to describing out director and how the director can modulate emotions, create change and for new connections. The book also discusses the basic fears and needs of the brain and how almost all social situations are reactions to these fears and needs. Understanding them helps us control the outcomes of social interactions. Overall, this was an excellent compilation of brain-based research. I think I'll have to read it again to really get everything out of it that is worthwhile (I probably shouldn't be reading it right before bed every night!).
