About book Why Have Kids? A New Mom Explores The Truth About Parenting And Happiness (Advance Reader's Copy) (2000)
To be honest, I was looking for a book on economics when the spine of the book drew me in. In spite of the sub-par writing (imo) and being the wrong target demo (the word feminist was used far too much) I truly enjoyed this book. The subject material and evidence against the societal norms kept me riveted; I ended up getting through this book in one morning. I think all people should read this to critically think about motherhood and having children. I wanted this book to be good. But instead, it turned out to be pretentious, condescending and, at places, downright misleading. I hoped to see some really strong points being made focusing on the fact that irrespective of what the society makes it out to be, having(or deciding to have) kids or not is actually a choice. In general there is no new point put forth that hasn't already been in the news or popular media. I also felt the arguments were incoherent, and also a few ad hominem attacks. Making such arguments does not help the cause the author tried to support with this book.
