Fourteen illustrators answer the question "What's your favorite animal?" with a picture and description. The only bad thing is the cover, which is kind of boring and weird, despite being drawn by Eric Carle. Some of the art is really meticulous and incredible, and some of it seems a bit phoned in (looking at you, Mo Willems' crayon doodle). But either way, the art reflects the unique styles of the artist and it's a real treat to see them all in one place. I also really enjoyed how the text descriptions reflected the audience and text style of each artist's books. A perfect introduction to 14 of today's best illustrators of children's books, this title includes a two-page spread from each contributor. All of the artists have drawn their own favorite animal and shared reasons for their affection for those animals. Back matter includes thumbnail sketches of all the contributors alongside photos of them in their younger days. Many of the photos feature the would-be artists with animals. This one is perfect for sharing with young readers or for students in children's literature classes since it offers insight into these artists and their creative processes. Artists featured include Nick Bruel, Eric Carle, Lucy Cousins, Susan Jeffers, Steven Kellogg, Jon Klassen, Tom Lichtenheld, Peter McCarty, Chris Raschka, Peter Sis, Lane Smith, Erin Stead, Rosemary Wells, and Mo Willems. The book's royalties support a great cause: The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.
