My favorite children's book I've read since getting a job in a library. Simple variant on the "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" formula, except that all the animals here are fantastically unrealistic, culminating in a black polar bear and a polka-dotted donkey (you can tell Carle really had fun with this one). The last page gave me chills, and I would recommend this book to anyone with an imagination, and especially people interested in being artists. Written as an homage to Franz Marc, a German artist who painted animals in bright and unusual colors. He and some of his fellow like-minded artists were labeled as "degenerates" by the Nazis.Wric Carle has filled this beautiful book with a blue horse, a red crocodile, a yellow cow, a pink rabbit, a green lion, an orange elephant, a purple fox, a black polar bear, and a polka-dotted donkey.Just delightful.All young artists--artists of EVERY age--should read and own a copy of this book.Read with Bryce and Sean, summer 2013.
