About book What Do Women Want?: Adventures In The Science Of Female Desire (2013)
Bought for 99p on a Kindle Daily Deal (like many of my books!), I thought this would give me something different to read. It's basically a discussion of various studies that have been made over the years into what turns women on. Some of the studies involve rats, some primates and some real women. The content is very dry and quite long winded, and although it was interesting in a few places, mostly I found it pretty boring. Mr. Bergner argues that: “Women’s desire — its inherent range and innate power — is an underestimated and constrained force, even in our times, when all can seem so sexually inundated, so far beyond restriction.” He opines that "One of our most comforting assumptions, soothing perhaps above all to men but clung to by both sexes, that female eros is much better made for monogamy than the male libido, is scarcely more than a fairy tale.”He is saying that women biologically like and want sex as much or more than men do. He bolsters these claims by citing many animal studies about female apes chasing the men around and female rats begging for sex from their male counterparts. He reports on studies of the female biology of desire. Dozens of studies pile up to support his claims. But I am left wondering if it matters. Really. Does it matter if women are biologically predisposed to enjoy sex and sex with multiple partners and sex often if they are constrained by culture and conditioning? A constraint is a constraint is a constraint. Maybe the book will add insight to women who feel very conflicted about their sexual desires and sexual choices. But for me, it was a bit hollow in the end. So what?Like "Sex and Dawn" (which I liked much better BTW) it is interesting to wonder about a world where sexuality was more in line with our biological development. But it a thought experiment only. We live in the real world. This book risks pushing men and women into a fantasy wonderland that has not existed in recorded history. Not a bad book, but not very useful in the real world, I think.
