While an interesting and certainly an original read. The story lacked something. In a way it seemed a little simplistic and I was honestly expecting a little more development. At first Kay seemed like a pretty dumb idiot. I mean venturing out towards border lands which could spark a war if someone was to see her or if she died. She is perfectly aware of this, but feels a thrill of the danger and a bit of adventure. She meets a dragon after an accident, who has ventured out toward the border out of curiosity, to learn the ways of the humans. At the same time however the military decides that it's time to wipe out the threat and purposely create and escalate conflict and make it seem like the dragons' fault. Since Kay now knows dragons more than anyone --and that's what annoyed me, after 60 years and clearly knowing that dragons were inteligent thinking creatures no one bothered to actually get to know them?-- she and her dragon try to figure out how to stop the conflict. The ending feels a very open... Kay decides to make herself a virgin sacrifice, like in the stories of old. We knows dragons will respect it, but not humans I'd think. Why would they? If anything it would seem like a kidnapping. Kay leaves the world behind and they go into hiding or whatever... but...we don't know if she actually helped anyone. And there doesn't seem to be a sequel in the works. This book was given to me as a gift when I was younger and I never got around to reading it. Now that I have, I have mixed feelings about the book. The book definitely is for young adults but definitely also has mature context (even if very subtle) here and there. Good book to just bypass time but not if you really want a gripping novel to take you on a fantastic journey. 4/5 stars, and would recommend to vampire/werewolf lovers with a different twist.
