About book Veronica Mars: The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line (2014)
To all marshmallows, you're going to love this but I would highly recommend you listen to the audio book, read by our amazing Veronica (Kristen Bell). This is all you could expect from one of the episode/movie. It's clever and funny and well written/read (although it's true it reads maybe more like a scenario than like a novel). The plot, even when a little predictable, is unfolding throughout the story to keep you on your toes. It's the same Veronica we came to love, dealing with new issues, faced with things in her life the episodes and movie had left unresolved. Now it could only get better if they got the whole cast to read for the audiobook, but in the meantime, Kristen Bell does a terrific job, what with knowing what the characters would sound like and all. I feel thankful she took on the part to read this. I look forward to the rest of the series! THIS BOOK IS LIKE A GIFT TO ALL MARSHMALLOWS!Rob Thomas, and Jennifer Graham, are such geniuses! A mystery series is smart way to extend the Veronica Mars story without having to deal with the various obstacles of tv/film production. While another Veronica Mars television season or film sequel would be better, after 5 years of waiting, I'll take anything I can get. In this case, it's the Veronica Mars mystery series. Its good i guess, like a screenplay, because I can play out the scenes in my head. Each line in the book is subject to my interpretation of it, I can imagine every detail however I want to. In this way, Rob is gifting us the whole Veronica Mars world. Okay, shall touch on a few points about the bookThe mystery is interesting, and believable. I like how Rob brings in organized crime into the story. Firstly, it deals with a new group of thugs(?) never before explored in the television series. In this case, its the mob. So immediately we are exposed to new crimes, new modus operandi, new characters. It's a whole new type of criminals Veronica is dealing with here. Secondly, it shows that no matter how resourceful and smart she is, there are some things that are just too dangerous to Veronica. She herself admits that "Cartels are a little out of my comfort zone" and Mac sums it up nicely "Cartel stuff is kind of outside our skill set, Veronica. These guys are really dangerous". Its a level-up from the other cases she solved before. She could handle cheating spouses, missing dogs, and the occasional murder cases, but there are some things which are out her league. Anyway, I'm kind of relieved that the thugs are not directly responsible for the girls' disappearance. Someone would have to pay dearly, if Veronica continued investigating into the mobs.I liked how Rob dealt with the reality of Veronica's choices. In the last scene of the movie, she appears confident with her decision to stay in Neptune. However, at the start of the book we see that it wasn't a happy ending, per se. She struggles to keep Mars Investigations open and deal with the loneliness that comes alongside a long-distance relationship. She even has to deal with the uncertainty of the future working dynamics with her dad. Typical Veronica Mars grittiness. But as usual, Veronica finds a way to work through her problems. I love how Rob Thomas brought back all our favorite characters. Veronica, Macs, Wallace, Keith, Logan, Weevil, and even Dick! He made references to Duncan and Lily too. However, I didn't really like the way he focused on Veronica so much so that the other characters comes off as flat, without personality. While its clear that Veronica is the titular character, the rest of the characters end up playing second fiddle. Apart from Veronica, Keith is the only one with some kind of character development. He initially objects to Veronica staying in Neptune, but eventually he came around to the idea, even getting a gun for Veronica and letting her work beside him. "Next time, I want you to wait for me. I'm your backup, Veronica. I'm your partner," Keith says. Come to think of it, its a new development to the story line, because it changes the dynamics of how Mars Investigations will operate. A sizable chunk of the book was devoted to Veronica's internal struggle as to whether she made the right choice coming back to Neptune. Its definitely a deep topic to consider, and something Veronica has to eventually has to come to terms with. I liked reading about it, because there is something about it that I can relate to. Who hasn't felt uncertainty and possibly regret, before? However, after awhile, it got a little bit tiresome. Overall, a great book to read!
