Whenever I think of true peace, I imagine going up to the mountains in Colorado and hiding myself away in a cabin; just getting away from the hustle and bustle of modern civilization and taking a few moments to find some mental and emotional rest. As I was reading through this novella, I found it so interesting to see how different these men were now that the war had ended. They were happy, working the land that had been in their family for years, with their wives and children at their sides, enjoying the fruits of their labor and living as they always intended to. I can't think of a better way to end such a fantastic series than with a short novella that lets the reader know what happens next without making it seem too fluffy. There were a few moments of angst, but that actually helped the story to become more plausible and enjoyable, rather than detracting from it. In the end, I was ready to say goodbye to the MacKinnon family, knowing that when I was ready to see them again, that I would know exactly where to find them: sitting in front of the fireplace, listening to beautiful music with their wives, while their children played at their feet. I have thoroughly enjoyed the individual stories of the McKinnon Rangers and it was so good revisiting and getting a wrap up of their lives together after the French and Indian War. Pamela Clare's trilogy (Surrender, Untamed, and Defiant) is an amazing historical romance and adventure series that is a favorite, and I will never forget these characters. Heartwarming.......just wonderful! I can never get enough of the McKinnon brothers. And I NEED a story for Joseph!4.5 stars
