About book Up From The Blue. Susan Henderson (2011)
I LOVED THIS BOOK! It kept you guessing from the very beginning. This is a book about a little girl named Tillie who basically grows up without a mom. Her mother doesn't understand thing like normal people do and stays away from her very judgmental husband. Her mother Mara tries to poison Tillie so that she doesn't have to be around her dad. Then one day Mara wakes up realizing that she causes people pain and suffering and kills herself. Tillie learns to grow up and have her won family and tries not to make the same mistakes that her mom did. This book was well-written but so sad. Told from the viewpoint of an eight year old girl, it's a stunning description of the devasting effect that mental illness can have on a child. I was disappointed in the ending though. I sympathized with the way she blocked out all negativity regarding her mother during that year. But, I found it very annoying that as an adult, knowing the truth, she harbored resentment toward her father, who while definitely flawed, did his best to keep everything together. I guess I expected her to understand once she grew up that her father's pain that year was just as great as hers. The ending made her seem, in one respect, as selfish as her mother.
