About book De Blauwe Kamer (2011)

This book reads like a memoir, but is a novel. Told by Tillie, as a young woman about to give birth and as her 8 yr. old self, it's the story of a family gripped by mom's inability to cope with the realities of military life, motherhood and being a housewife and the secrets they all must keep. I really liked this book, it kept me interested and invested in the characters and their lives. Not a happy story, but it was a good one. A fabulous read--the juxtaposition between a military father who is a rules driven character with severe boundaries and his free, artsy & creative wife who loathes structure. The wife has mental illness which is untreated and becomes more acute with time which leaves the family in shambles...What a roller coaster. The book is narrated through the eyes of the daughter so it gives a perspective as to how a child lives with a parent who has mental illness and a parent who is narrow & restrictive. Just a wonderful book - can't wait for another book by Susan Henderson.

Exqusitely written, haunting novel aboyt the effect of maternal depression. Couldn't put it down.

Misschien net geen 4 sterren waard, eerder 3,5. Wel een boek waar je even stil van wordt.
