I started reading this book today as I thought it had sat long enough in my to read pile. I have to say I don't regret that descision at all. I started reading this amazing book and before I knew it I was done. It was that good. Time just seemed to run away from me. I loved it.I haven't read the other books in this series or any books by this author but today, she has made me a fan. I am so reading her other books. The story flowed well and I was in love with the characters. A very enjoyable read. Okay, I will freely admit that I am a sucker for a soldier and that probably gets this story an automatic two stars out of the gate. Add to that the fact that I have wanted Brand to get his own story and his HEA since we met him in IF YOU LEAVE, and the rating goes up to 3 stars for wish fulfillment. Next, everyone who reads my reviews knows how much good character development can impact my perception of a story. I loved Nora, loved that she had been crushing on Brand for YEARS. If anyone deserved to have a girl want him that long, it's Brand (particularly given what Jacey has done to him over the years). And Brand...oh, Brand. I loved him as much as Gabe, though, I think he was a lot more well-adjusted than his bff. Truthfully, knowing what Brand's childhood had been like, I can see how the PTSD affected Gabe more acutely than Brand. While Gabe's life had been pretty decent, Brand's was a horror show when they were young. The gap between war and real life was smaller for Brand. There were so many things I loved about this story that if I named them all, I'd give the whole thing away. I'll hit the most important points. Like any Courtney Cole story I've read, the sex is HOT. These two steam up the pages, though, not in the way that Dom and Jacey do. The characters - lead and supporting alike - evoke emotions (some good, some very, very bad!) and if you like character-driven stories, you'll enjoy this one.The things I didn't like? Well, Jacey showed up and Gabe didn't. I'd rather have seen more Gabe and not caught up so much with Jacey, but that's not going to cause conflict. Great stories have conflict. And I kept wondering if the love scenes were realistic, given Brand's condition, but she made the effort to consult someone on it, so I suspended my disbelief. Neither of those things knocks it down more than 0.25 stars, so, rounded up, we'd be at an easy 5 anyway. With my initial rating of 3 stars before I even started the book, the rest of it makes up those last two stars. Frankly, if I could give more than 5 I probably would. Thanks, Courtney Cole, for giving Brand such a great story!
