About book Uncanny Avengers, Vol. 1: The Red Shadow (2013)
The idea behind Uncanny Avengers is a good one. Before now, the Avengers always assembled with individuals mostly happy to work together and follow Captain America’s lead. Now Cap wants to make a new team which has X-Men and Avengers, under the leadership of Havoc. In the wake of AVX, he realizes the heroes haven’t done enough to help mutants over the years.Rogue doesn’t trust the Scarlet Witch. Alex Summers is uncertain of his leadership skills but feels he must somehow make-up for the sins of his brother Scott. Cap has to get used to not calling the shots. Wolverine and Thor are the stalwarts of the team, who just want to get on with it already! Needless to say, the group dynamics alone make for interesting reading. In many ways, it’s like reading a Thunderbolts title. But there are problems. “The Red Skull has returned - straight out of the 1940s - and he wants to destroy all mutants!” A Nazi wants to kill people who are different? *yawn* I get that the writers were trying to bring the team together with a villain that comes from the Avengers roster but who is threatening mutants, but Red Skull just wasn’t an inspired choice. And his “power-up” is preposterous at best. Secondly, though it’s interesting to see a team that hasn’t gelled yet, and heck, may never get along, I’m concerned this angst will take the place of actual plot. Wanda and Rogue’s “fighting” could get old very fast. And, readers really need to see a reason why Cap put this particular team together. That said, there’s enough potential here that I’ll keep reading. I like the idea of a mixed team, but the story needs to support it. Cautiously recommended. It doesn't make any sense (even by Marvel standards). The story just wasn't all that good and the Red Skull didn't seem like a very fitting villain. Remender also changes writing styles drastically half-way through the story which makes no sense. This book is a definite pass unless you want to keep up with the avengers and x-men books regardless of quality (something i'm planning to do). This book at least has its moments, but not many.oh and i also think that by Cassaday's standards, the art was poor.
