About book Un Cuore Rosso Rubino In Un Freddo Mare Blu (2012)
I love to take a break and read a novel where you just slide right in the protagonist's life, because the author's style is so easy and natural. Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea is that kind of easy and comfortable read. Florine's mother just disappears on an annual weekend away with a girlfriend, and she's left to navigate the perils of puberty without her young, fun and loving mother. Not to mention being left with the unanswerable question -- did she leave us or was she taken unwillingly? And yet, life continues to go on, with this huge hole in Florine's life and heart. Luckily she has her paternal grandmother and close year around friends, which keep her afloat when her father's old girlfriend insinuates herself back into Florine's father's life. It's a fascinating look at growing up in the early 60s, the life of a year-round resident in a vacation town in Maine where the summer people are very wealthy, and how a preteen girl makes her way to adulthood, without the guidance of her loving mother. There were several choices on how it could end. I was hoping for one - the author chose another. Was written about a place in Maine, but it could have been a coastal town on the Oregon coast...could have been my town. Lots of interesting characters. Back to the ending, it was probably more realistic but I always have hope. I liked this book bunches. Great reader on the audio book. Hope to read more by this author.
