About book Rubinrotes Herz, Eisblaue See (2011)

This story of a young girl's struggle to make it past the harshness of the world and to survive into adulthood is both touching and well-conceived. Though certain aspects and happenings are predictable, Rogers made me believe and want them for the character anyway, so the emotional pay-off is worthwhile. A few grammatical and vocabulary errors aside, the writing flows well and maintains its pace, and Rogers really paints a picture of another place. You can almost feel and smell it, and a little bit of it sinks into a part of your soul. Maybe it's just that I really want to visit Maine, but I quite enjoyed this easy-to-read-though-tragic-and-painful book and its characters. This book was won from the publisher through the Goodreads First Reads program. Thank you! SPOILERS...................................I thought this one was just okay. Far from being a good mystery, it turned out to be basically a diary of a young girl's growing up, and it was just not that interesting. I really liked the grandmother and how Florine was lucky to have her. I know Florine's father was lost in his own way but extremely selfish, and I have no words for that woman. Neither of them gave one second's thought to how Florine felt, and how much pain she was in, from the first minute, and here is another woman moving in on her only parent, and her home. It also infuriates me how people expect children to do all the adjusting to what parents want to do, and have to just put up with whoever they bring home.
