About book Turn In The Road, A (2012)

Hmm. Part of me really enjoyed this book. Nice, easy read, nothing too controversial, nothing hard to digest. Good writing, part of a series...etc. However - there were a couple of characters in these pages who DROVE ME NUTS and made it hard to like the book overall.Simple story: Mum (Bethann) and Dad (Grant) have been divorced for 6 years (Dad cheated on Mum and went on to marry the mistress). Bethann, daughter (Annie) and granny (Ruth) take cross country road trip together. All three have big decisions they need to make about their personal lives. Road trip gives them a chance to think, do crazy stuff, get to know each other better and hopefully work themselves out.1. The daughter - Annie. OMG. One year off finishing her MBA makes her what, 21? Good Lord. She acted like she was 15. She was a whining, spoilt brat for most of the book, and since I listened to this as an audio-book, it was up close and personal. The narrator totally nailed her petulant, selfish ways. Annie was at her mother the whole time to get back with her dad, and couldn't seem to let her mum just make the decision in her own time. Annie spent all this time calling her dad about what her mum was getting up to, spying on her mum and generally getting cranky when things didn't go her way. Really didn't like this character -and since she was in the book so much, it really detracted from my overall enjoyment.2. The ex-husband - Grant. OMG. Stalker, cad. He has an affair on his wife. He then marries the mistress. Is with new wife for 5 years and they end up divorced too...and then he wants back with the first wife. He also couldn't seem to realise why Bethann, the first wife, might not be up for the trust thing with him again. He tried to find out what they were up to via his daughter, he was ringing everyday to see how they were going. Not like the three women weren't grown ups who could take care of themselves? He did finally redeem himself a bit by the end - but it took a long long time to get there.3. The mum - Bethann. While I liked here character well enough. There was alot of time where she took crap from her ex-husband and daughter and even granny, and didnt retaliate, didnt get het up, just let things ride - and after awhile it felt like she was too Pollyanna, too nice. Then there was the problem where she wouldnt make up her mind about whether to go back to ex-husband or be with someone else. Really - dangling two men for all that time. Hmmm. Not sure about that at all.So overall - a nice read, good storyline, but you just have to close your eyes to the character issues and keep telling yourself "its just a book, its not real". So I really enjoy following along to the story of how Bethanne path and how where it took her. This was not my favorite Debbie Macomber book but I think this is a good read if there is nothing else to read. I also really like how Debbie Macomber use one of the good yarn ladies to continue their story and to see where they had gone in life and to get catch up with Bethanne. I was very happy for Bethanne and how her story came along.
