Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter, Ann, weave their travels to Turkey, Greece, and France with their personal lives and their relationship. Ann is in her twenties and trying to decide what to do with her life after plan A doesn't work out. Sue is also facing a turning point in her life, just having turned fifty. Described on the book cover as a modern-day Persephone and Demeter story, what interested me most was Sue's description of the "birth" of Secret Life of Bees as well as the unique and important relationship that many mothers and daughters share. Such a smart memoir...made me go out to read some more great classic Greek mythology, and Christian texts. I expected a light read, but truly a deep read, a thought provoking read about relationships between mother Sue Monk Kidd and daughter Ann Taylor Kidd. A great text about the liminal periods al experience in life and how to handle these transitions gracefully. The only thing that troubled me was that if these women were not women of means, they couldn't take this journey. Greece...France... In just a a few years, we all can't have that. This would be an amazing text to come in a illustrated version so the readers could see all the sights and art work that these women saw.
