Ryuuji Takasu has always been judged based on his appearance; although sweet, he has a menacing look, and most people can't get past that. However, with a new school year starting, he's hoping that his crush, Minori Kushieda, will notice him and maybe even fall in love with him. His dreams are crushed, however, when he runs into Taiga Aisaka, who is also known as the Palmtop Tiger and is known for her nasty personality. What's worse is that she's Minori's best friend. How will the pair's relationship change after their first encounter?I originally watched Toradora in 2011 and fell in love with the entire thing. Everything about it was so comedic and not cliched, and yet...it also was somewhat relatable. The connection I formed with all of the characters was amazing and something I hadn't experienced before; usually, I end up disliking one character and nothing they do can change my mind. However, even though there were some characters I wasn't too fond of, I did empathize with them and eventually grew to like them. Once I heard that the manga was being translated and released, I decided to give it a try. It is definitely different from the anime: it's more comedic and focuses more on the interactions between the characters and Taiga appears to be more girly than in the anime. However, I did like this a lot, even with these differences. Of all the ways for two characters to be brought together being united in an oblivious attempt to pursue other romantic interests is possibly one of my favourites. I'll help you with you're crush, if you help me with mine! Hijinx ensue!! I think this first volume of Toradora is a great jumping off point. It sets up the characters personalities so perfectly that you just know this is going to be good. Our two leads, Takasu Ryuuji and Aisaka Taiga, may not not seem like a good fit at first, but you can feel their chemistry almost automaticly. I expect tons of adorableness is to come from these two! If you've read or watched anything Haruhi Suzumiya related then this couple is going to feel very familiar. The kind, domestic guy, that works hard and has trouble with girls, paired with the loud, hot tempered girl, who is used to getting what she wants, but is ultimately just a huge spaz. What differs these two series is very important as the similarities stop with the characters. Haruhi Suzumiya is supernatural, science fiction, fantasy focused and Toradora is a romantic comedy romp, but the similarities are striking enough that cross recommendation is probably bound to happen. I'm just super enthusiastic about reading the next volume. This is the first manga volume one I've read in a while that I've liked without coming away with a ton of complaints. You've got my attention Toradora!
