About book Tiddler: The Story-Telling Fish (2007)

Tiddler The Story-telling Fish is a book about a small fish named Tiddler who is always late for class. Each time he is late, he makes up a different story as to why he has arrived late. The story then develops as one day he then has a reason for being late, and he uses his story to arrive back at school.I enjoyed reading this book and think it would be really well received by a Reception or Year 1 class, and possibly by older classes as there are a lot of different discussion and teaching points that can come from this story. Firstly, the students will enjoy reading or listening to this story, as there is a lot of rhyme, so they can try and guess the next word, as well as there being a lot of alliteration, which young students enjoy listening to. There is also a large amount of conversation in this story, so it can be read very interactively. The book is very colourful with great illustrations, so the children will thoroughly enjoy looking at the pages too. I think there are many uses for this book in the classroom, in particular through the 'story telling' theme, as the fish is telling a story, and this is how he finds his way in the end. I think this will be a good point for students to focus on - when have they told stories, or if they know stories that have been told for a very long time. It can also be used from a scientific and geographical educational point of view, as there are a lot of sea creatures included in the narrative. The issue of net fishing is also incorporated in the plot. This could include art as well, as the children can be encouraged to draw ocean scenes and pictures of fish they know. Another element that can be included in the teaching of this book is time, as the teacher of the class is always checking the time, so pupils can be involved in learning the time from this. Imagination is another theme that is key in this book, Tiddler has a vast imagination, and this is something that can be discussed by the students. This book has similar traits to the boy who cried wolf I really enjoyed this book. It is about a story telling fish called Tiddler who is always giving crazy excuses of why he is late to school and just like "The boy who cried wolf". Tiddler unfortunately trying to come up with his best story yet does gets lost and is therefore late for school. However there is a twist with this book his stories do not come back to haunt him they lead him all the way back home. This can be used in KS1 PSHCE why we should not lie task and the consequences of doing so.
