The only thing I didn't like much about the book was the illustrations. In my opinion they seemed to scribbled and all over the place which made it hard to see it clearly! It looked sort of messy. But overall, the story was very cute and sweet. I loved how the kittens represent children so well and the mother cat like any other human mother. It was adorable how the kittens would purr when they're happy and I think any child that hears this story will be able to relate the happy purrs to when their own pet cat purrs when happy. I laughed when the kittens went out on a mission to find their mittens all because they wouldn't have pie. It reminds me of all the times my parents would tell me that I couldn't go out with friends or to the movies unless my room was clean, and so I'd go on a crazy cleaning spree because I wanted to go out! Just like the three little kittens wanting some pie. The ending was silly how the kittens will probably repeat the process all over again when they ask their mother if they could go play outside. A generally disappointing version of a familiar nursery rhyme. Although Pinkney is a talented and honored illustrator, I found the illustrations in this book to be a little too busy, and I wished they were a little more crisp. The variations on the familiar rhyme added a little interest, but since my copy did not have the music included, it was awkward to sing to my daughter (who much prefers books to be sung).
