About book Thorn Queen (2009)

I enjoyed the 1st book in this series more than I enjoyed this one, but still feel this next chapter of the Dark Swan series was well worth the time I spent reading it. Mead intricately wove the concept of duality through out the entire tale and because this is the 2nd book of the series it (at least to me) felt like a bit genius on her part. I was intrigued with each reference of duality that this book explored. Some of the more obvious ones being the fact that the protagonist (Eugenie) is torn between 2 different worlds as well as 2 different love interests, the fact that Eugenie spends a great deal of time deciding between the 2 different types of queen she will ultimately become, the two different Storm King daughters whom could bear the prophesied heir. To the more subtle changes in the structure of Eugenie's relationship with just about every support character within the storyline in this book as compared to the last. I'm happy that my travels within the Dark Swan series has only breeched its midpoint. I like this book, much more than its predecessor. It wasn't all about how everyone wanted to rape Eugenie as much as the last. I liked the way the author describes Eugenie's reluctance to bond with her new kingdom. She is faced with a few challenges in regard to this too, being that she unknowingly made her new kingdom an Otherworld version of Tuscon, stripping away the resources that they once had, under Aeson's rule. She becomes better acquainted with Dorian, and more compassionate towards the gentry. The storylines in this book tied together nicely, leaving me more in tune with the characters, and wanting to read more. I've liked most of Mead's other work, and am becoming a steady fan of this series too. She is a brilliant author. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes this, or similar genres.
