I'm not exactly sure how to review individual issues of comics...I'm very excited to see where this series takes us! Lady Thor(solely to differentiate) is taking a traditionally male role and proving that a female can be just as strong and just as tough. She isn't just a female superhero who gets some minor attention, or has minor capabilities, but is wielding the power of THOR! I'm very excited to see how she progresses as a character and to figure out who the heck she is. And to see more change in Thor Dude. Thor is a woman. The person wielding Mjolnir, the hammer forged by Dwarven blacksmiths to be possessed by only him who is worthy, is a woman! My first Marvel comic, written by Jason Aaron, did not disappoint. Thor Odinson is no longer worthy of his hammer, Mjolnir. He cannot lift it from the moon orbiting Asgard on which it rests. After a self-imposed exile, Odin is back in Asgard (now called Asgardia for a reason I must have missed). Freyja is not needed to rule anymore, but she does not want to give up the throne that easily. The frost giants have invaded Midgard and Odin does not want to fight, but Freyja wants to go to war. Thor leaves his hammer and heads home…to earth, to fight. I’ve never actually read a Marvel title. You may know that I am relatively new to comics, so Thor #1 is my first Marvel title. I wasn’t disappointed. I thought the story was entertaining and well-paced, and I was really excited to see how they made Thor into a woman. Would he be put under a spell? A sex change? What would happen?SPOILER: Neither of those things happened. On Midgard, Melekith is directing the frost giants in their search for something that’s been uncovered of theirs. Thor arrives but without Mjolnir, he’s beaten and his arm is chopped off! The last we see of him is him floating down in the water, supposedly dead. Back on the moon, Freyja says that there must always be a Thor as she picks up the hammer and becomes…well, at least the person who wields the hammer!How creative! I wasn’t sure exactly what I was expecting, but I can safely say I was surprised by this turn of events. Happily surprised. Jason Aaron has been over the Thor line for a while, and I can see why. He knows exactly what he’s doing.I know I didn’t talk much about the artwork (which was clean and beautifully colored in blues and greens with bright splashes of red and white) or the story, but I don’t think I need to. Thor #1 is an unveiling, meant to shock, intrigue, and make you want to keep reading. It did all of those things for me. Looking forward to Issue #2!
