About book This Little Piggy Went To The Liquor Store (2012)
As a new mother of a pretty great baby who sleeps through the night and hardly ever cries, I really wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this one. Was I going to get it? Would it even be funny to me since I didn't experience a lot of the sleeplessness and such that typically comes with a newborn? I LOVED IT! I was laughing out loud through the whole thing, to the point that it became a book I couldn't read at night in bed because I was disturbing my husband! After about halfway through the book, I decided you didn't have to be a home to understand the author's humor and recommended it to a friend of mine who is not yet a mother but a newlywed. She loved it as well. Can't wait to read the second book! There were parts of this that were absolutely hilarious. My abs were a little sore by the end of the second chapter from laughing.So the reason I ultimately found it to be just "OK" is partially because some of the subject matter is outside my scope. While I appreciate frank humorous discussion of the humiliations and horrors of pregnancy and parenting, not having had those experiences myself, there was way too much of it for me to enjoy. This could entirely be that case of a nonparent dissolving into bleary eyed boredom over someone talking on and on about their kids, but I would like to give myself a little more credit than that. After the first quarter of the book, the vignettes started to feel more and more like too much detail was offered just to fill out pages. The author's time hopping started to feel disorienting, like listening to someone in a crowded room and knowing you missed a key segue in the conversation.I hate not finishing a book but wanted to quit less than halfway through. I kept reading based on the captivating humour of the beginning chapters, hoping to find more of it, but never could really get back into it. It might be a fantastic read for someone else, but not I.
