I read through a few chapters in this book then decided to put it down because it wasn't for me. Demetri Martin is hilarious and I enjoy his stand up. I prefer non-fiction stories though and for there to be a theme throughout the book, even if it is just a collection of stories. I didn't get that from this book so I put it down. However, if those things don't bother you, then I would recommend giving it a chance. The book started off a little slow and I got worried. Much of the humor of Demetri Martin is his mix of styles - visual then stricter “punchline” jokes - as well as his deadpan delivery. While the book captured the deadpan delivery, one or two of the earlier jokes were long and quickly lost their originality. But by the time you get about 20 pages in, it really starts to catch. He mixes in his visual jokes, always good, and has some really strong hits in there. The book is a departure from the typical comedian book, in that it’s strictly comedy, as opposed to “autobiographical” a la Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler, Steve Martin, etc. But it’s definitely strongly delivered, and I found he hit it on about 85% of his jokes.Definitely would recommend checking it out, it’s a good summer/weekend read.
