About book Things We Need (2013)

It's commentary of coming into adulthood and familial relationships/positions rang true to me. Sometimes being a functioning, healthy adult is hard, and in fact it can be hard to even define what makes you a functioning, healthy adult. The book explores that. It also explores dealing with your family's expectation of what role you should play.Mostly I love this book because Jennifer Close's ability to capture everyday moments enchanted me. I'm not sure what to say about this book. Although Close certainly has the idea of family and its messy relationships down, the execution is puzzling. The individual women have distinct personality quirks--so distinct that you really want to shake a couple of them for being so obtuse--but I couldn't really connect or empathize with any of them. The story threads meander but never fully resolve, kind of like the character arcs. At the end, everyone's in a different place, but they don't seem to have learned or changed much. It wouldn't get a re-read.
