In my ongoing effort to work my way through all of Sarah Vowell's books, I read "The Wordy Shipmates" in honor of the recent Thanksgiving holiday. This entry into the Sarah Vowell library stays true to her signature genre of historical non-fiction with her sarcastic musings sprinkled throughout. In "Shipmates", Vowell retells the history of the Puritans that colonized this country, and tries to get into their mindset by reading their journals, sermons, and speeches. I found Sarah's perspectives to be both entertaining and informative. There are a few spots where the account gets bogged down in minutia, but for the most part it was an enjoyable read. Fans of Sarah Vowell's other books, in particular "Unfamiliar Fishes" and "The Partly Cloudy Patriot", will find familiar footing in "The Wordy Shipmates" and will not be disappointed. If you have never read any of her works, my recommendation is to start with "Assassination Vacation" as the perfect gateway to get you hooked. I listened to this on CD which helped me to enjoy the humor a bit more than if I'd actually read it, I think. The author read the book and her voice was fun to listen to. It took me a little while to figure out why her voice was familiar. She's Violet from "The Incredibles"! I appreciated this different and sarcastic way of learning some history. It made me interested in learning more about certain historical figures, and any book that can do that for me, I consider successful. The Puritans were some interesting folks! It is however, obvious, that the author is atheist, and her personnel views and skepticism towards religion (Christianity) and God definitely came through in her words. Some people might find it offensive. I, however, appreciate other points of view. There were some parts that actually strengthened and supported my own personal religious views. Not my favorite book, but an insightful read.
