I was initially skeptical about reading this book due to it clearly being about horses and having never been a 'horse' person. However as soon as I started reading it, it became clear that it was about much more than that. It is a tale of survival, endurance, loyalty, finding a family in those around you (whether human or animal) and trust. Some parts of it were very unbelievable and there was one part when the pace slowed a little, but on the whole it is a great book for teens (or adults) and is about so much more than horses. The descriptions of the steppe around which it is based evoke great images and it is great to read a book about the war which is not set in Germany or Britain.A great read! While not the most well written (large info dumps, unrealistic dialogue, etc.) It was a fascinating bit of history I did not know, and that kept me reading. Of course we know that Hitler tried to dispose of whole races of humans, but I did not know that he tried to do the same for species of animals as well. I also loved the almost fairy tale, magical realist way the relationship with the girl and the horses was presented. Altogether an interesting read.
Do You like book The Winter Horses (2014)?
Writing is simplistic but the story is fascinating. It's a short book; I read it in one sitting.
