Reads like two books. One following 3 very particular lives 1 exchange student from rural Afghanastan 2 one a lawyer and her client at GITMO 3 An American college graduate originally from Pakistan. These detailed actual stories are VERY fascinating. Its amazing the author can get these details from people. some not very flattering.The second part of the book is a critique of Bush and his administration re Iraq War along with details from all political arenas about the truth of WMD's at the time of the invasion.Suskind is terrific in educating one as to the realities of US Policy and operations. Excellent. He attempts two things. One to convince the reader that America has lost its way and needs to regain its moral leadership. Policy must be based on values and human connections. Second, he wants to reveal the errors and deceptions of the Bush administration. By weaving various stories in and out the main thread he succeeds in both but occassionally loses the reader and probably himself. It might have been better with more focused but that would be at the expense of the story(ies) which is well told.
