Everyone in this book seemed to live a wasted vigil type of life.Thank God, I was not born in a country like this, I really feel sorry for all these people who have to face horrid choices constantly.The "religion" of Islam has destroyed the lives of so many people and I found it hard to understand why the older man remained thereafter his "friends and neighbors" destroyed in hideous, hellishways his life and that of his wife, daughter and grandson. I guessthere were some moments of beauty but really, it was not worth it. Such beautiful language to describe such unspeakable horror. Set in post 9/11 Afghanistan. This book did such a good job of shifting between different characters and showing their viewpoints that it made me feel like war is nobody's fault. Everyone acts for what they feel are the right reasons. This both frightens me and gives me a feeling of acceptance...which frightens me further. I finished this book about two weeks ago and I still feel lost in this story. I don't want to read it again but I don't feel like I'm done with it yet. Haunting, I guess, would be an appropriate word here.
I loved his prose although some parts were quite tragic and difficult to read.
