I gave this a 4-star rating but maybe it was a 3.75. I did thoroughly enjoy the story and think I caught on to the son situation pretty early on but was hoping it wasn't true. I'm glad it had a sweet ending. Harold's journey was a lesson in not judging and his insight into his thoughts and feelings helped him for his future. It was like he experienced one long meditation, even with being interrupted by the other people joining him along the way. I think after a book discussion or two I will end up liking this novel even more! I wanted to love this book. Much of the writing is beautiful. The pacing suits the main character. I liked watching Harold's emotions and preconceptions change as the route grew longer. Harold's trip had a hint of the countryside walkabouts by Leonard Bast in "Howard's End." But crucial information is withheld for no real reason, making the latter part of the book a big disappointment rather than a moving read. I felt manipulated.
Somewhat underwhelmed by this book that everyone else seems to have loved.
