I honestly wasn't sure I'd like this book. As an alumni of LU I decided to give it a shot. I loved the memories that reading this book brought back. All the abbreviations and the classes and the wonderful times. What I didn't like was the author's agenda. He didn't go into the project with an open mind, and a lot of times it felt like he was looking for reinforcements to his previous views. His family came across as close minded and scarier than the people Kevin thought he was going to encounter. He went to a Christian college for a semester. Not mars. Overall it was a fun book if you don't take it or his project too seriously. Interesting premise and interesting read. Glad it was a positive spin, but I'm not sure how I feel about the honesty of the author. I'm pretty sure soldiers know when there is an embedded reporter with them. It seems like the author was surprised and maybe a little disappointed to find out that Christians/Moral Majority are actually pretty nice people. It seems like Roose learned that his views weren't totally correct, but it doesn't sound like his learnings have affected others (i.e. his aunts came across as pretty intolerant women that were unwilling to bend, as did some of his Brown friends).
Excellent character study. Well written, and prompted a wonderful discussion.
