This book moves the story of Elminster ahead several centuries. He begins in stasis trapped in a tomb freed he finds magic has become unreliable and must survive on his wits and the skills he picked up earlier in his life. Elminster undergoes further magical training by my a wicked sorceress named The Lady of Shadows. He becomes her court wizard when she takes over the realm of Galadorna. This book isn't so much about Elminster vs some evil, it is more about the effect Elminster has on his surroundings, and he becomes aware of how important his role is on the Realms

For me, personally, the plot just bounces around way too much, involving too many random characters that in the end server barely any purpose whatsoever.
